Below are the First Grade Spelling Words in our reading series, Reading Street. These words are very important because they practice the phonics skills that are taught. Help your child practice reading and writing these words.
Fluency in First Grade
One component of reading is fluency, which is the ability to read with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression. At Clyde Brown, all students are assessed in this area three times a year. Readers who read at the expected fluency rate are able to focus on the meaning of what they are reading.

Ways to practice at home are:
- Model reading to your child using expression
- Choral read, read the text together as one voice
- Listen to your child reread a book or a page
- Alternate reading pages
- Demonstrate pausing at periods and commas
- Practice reading grade level high frequency words
- Read rhyming books, poems, and books with repeated phrases and patterns (i.e.: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. & Eric Carle)
- Have your child read to a younger sibling
- Remember to practice with easy books for your child so they don’t become frustrated, make it fun!
